Tim Pyle...You will be missed! 12/24/74-12/29/11

A great friend of SBC's and the Harrisonburg community passed away on Thursday. He had a hard uphill battle with cancer and hopefully he can now rest and enjoy the view. We love you!

Happy Holidays from SBC.

Last night was the annual SBC Holiday party and Tim and Sue's beautiful home. It is always good for the SBC to get together, enjoy some delicious Indian American Cafe followed by the deserts from the Joshua Wilton House.

12 December 2011

Tonight is the monthly meeting of the minds at the  Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition Social at Clementine where fellow cyclists of all types can eat, drink, and hang out. Good times are had by all so make sure to come out tonight and support your local cycling scene! This weekend made for excellent "chilly" conditions to get out on the bike on both road and mountain. Kyle and others sought out to conquer Elliot Knob, the highest point in the GWNF, not once but twice making a figure eight route that was sure to put them in the Hurt Locker. Collin, David, and Paul went out with Spagehtti Legs Team Manager Scott Wootten, Cycling News' Sue George, Matthew, Collin W., and Chad in the National Forest to ride, take in some views, and record some video on Lookout Mountain. This Thursday will be another installment of SBC's Winter Bike Maintenance Clinic. This week Tim and others from the SBC staff will be going over shifting and gear adjustments. Ever had that shifting that was never spot on , weird noises coming from the derailleur? Well come out and learn how to tune you own derailleurs! Until Next Time, Go Ride Bikes!

Monday 28 November

Great weather has made for excellent riding conditions, this is the kind of November weather we can all get used to. Take Advantage of these temps and go for a spin! Nice weather always calls for a pre/post ride Acai Bowl from PULP to keep the energy levels at a max, so come on by and let everyone working here inside know how good your ride was on this beautiful day.  Don't forget this Thursday will be another installment of SBC's Winter Maintenance Workshop, so bring your bike and get a chance to  learn some new tips from the area's finest mechanics and socialize with other riders in the cycling community!  Some of the SBC crew got out on a ride to Woodstock tower this weekend, good rocks, flowing ridge and great views. Check it Out!

Don't under estimate November, it can shine!!

The Six Pack Invitational weekend was beautiful....must be the reason no one from Charlottesville  or the Quinn Family came to the event. The riding on Saturday was a blast, Braley's was flowing like no other trail on earth, especailly starting closer to Big Bald Knob. Rock Garden "OH MY"...The party was a little slow though..

THANKS TO EVERYON FOR 17 YEARS OF FUN TIMES!!

The clocks took a turn, some say for the worse, some same for the better...If you want to get your riding in make sure you take a long lunch break or charge the lights for some night time fun...The moon will be kicking the next few nights so take advantage of full moon fever.

Don't forget to bring your gear and some extra cash for the Parts/Gear Swap. A great way to pick up good parts (clothing, frames, components etc.) and also clear out the gear you are not using anymore.

The OH-NO Dynamoooo ride was a No Go Dynamooooo ride due to the terrible weather conditions that presented themselves on Saturday night....who really wanted to ride 130 miles in 40 degreess and rain...I DO, I DO, I DO. Then again it might have been snow, yes the first snow fell this weekend in the mountains, at least it waited until October!

Just announces is the fall SBC/TREK Demo Event. Trek will bring both DEMO Bike Fleets (including the WSD, women's specific design) to the Massanutten Western Slope on October 23rd. Register now to help the planning and let us know what bikes you are interested in trying.

Grand Fondo...was Grand Fun!!

Sunday...clean up day for the Grand Fondo Teeam.

For a first year event, and more participants then expected, things went pretty darn smooth for the Jeremiah Bishop Alpine Loop Grand Fondo. The weather was about perfect considering it was between two very rain days in the Burg. A lot of folks realized why a compact crank set and big cassette were recommended, put it this way..Route 33 was the gentle climb.

Grand Fondo is upon us! Why is everyone chaning their gearing?

Wednesday the 21st...A week of overcast skies but lets not forget what the rain brings to the Valley; beautiful, green and lush forest, all in time for the Shenandoah Mountain Bike Festival.

The weather forecast for Saturday's Grand Fondo and Bath County Harvest Moon Festival.  Both events are on Saturday and will showcase the beautiful riding in western Virginia and West Virginia.

The battle of the Blue Ridge Cup started last night with Tuesday Cyclo Cross, the first event was at Hillandale Park.  It is amazing how hard folks will ride for a trophy made of old bike parts and beer cans, nothing better then grass root's bike events.

29th Shenandoah Valley Century in the bag...A great history of Harrisonburg cycling.

After a rainy week the weekend turned out perfect for both the Taste and Tour Ride (benefit for the Valley Aids Network) and Sunday's 29th running of the Shenandoah Valley Century. In it's first year the Taste and Tour ride did a great job and Art did a masterful job putting together the 29th annual Century (his 28th year being head organizer..WOW!). The Century's growth shows how Harrisonburg cycling scene has grow over the years  as well as how many folks love to come to the area to ride the beautiful valley roads and participate in the well organized events.

Link to great video from Robert Cone from Sunday's Century: http://www.svbcoalition.org/manager/front.php

Don't forget to come out tonight for the Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition monthly social at Clementine Cafe, 7:30pm! All are welcome.

Wet weather forecast...Time to recover from SM100!!

Labor weekend means a busy Saturday at SBC and hundreds of cyclist coming to town for the Shenandoah Mountain 100 Mile Back Country Mountain Bike Race. A large portion of the local bike community was out at Stokesville either volunteering to help make sure the event was smooth or battling the 100 mile course. Smiles were rolling across the finish line from the 1st place rider to the last rider rolling in under dark skies.

[caption id="attachment_250" align="aligncenter" width="600" caption="One rider beat the 7 hour mark...OUCH!!"][/caption]

Every year following the SM100 is the Shenandoah Valley Century , this event has not just the 100 mile road route but also options for 25 and 50 miles. Your better sign up early to make sure you get a slot..over 260 folks have signed up and the event will most likely fill up!

Hurricane Irene...made for a beautiful Sunday in the Valley.

Some Saturdays rains and overnight winds was about the extent of the feel the Valley received from Hurrican Irene. The weekend moisture will just make conditions for Sunday's upcoming Shenandoah Mountain 100 Miler that much more perfect. During Saturday's post six pack trail work there were many pre riders seen getting their pre game ride on the Lynn Trail.  Sunday's inspection of Dowell's Draft showed the trails is ready to rock for those who will be chugging down to SBC/Sole Source Check Point 3.

[caption id="attachment_245" align="aligncenter" width="800" caption="20 feet off the SM100 Course...worth the detour!!"][/caption]

Check Points 2/6, 3 and 5 all have slight new locations, setting up farther off the road to help reduce the confusion on the open traffic roads...SBC will be out at the SM100 all

Monday August 22nd..Welcome JMU!!

This week is move in week for James Madison Univeristy, you might have to avoid campus area if you are out and about.  JMU has made some major changes to transportation and campus over the summer. With new gates that limit vehicle access to many portions of campus, bicycles might become even more attractive means of transportation. The more people that ride the safer the roads become for all!!

[caption id="attachment_241" align="aligncenter" width="600" caption="Start of the Shenandoah Valley Century...29th annaul running is September 11th."][/caption]

If you have not registered for the Shenandoah Valley Century think about doing it soon, field limit is 3oo riders, with rides of 25, 50 and 100 this popular event will most likely filled up! If you are new to the area this is great opportunity to discover some of the beautiful riding in the Valley and the friendly bicycle community.

OHHHHHHHHHH NOOOOOOO!!!!! Dyanamo 2011 October 1st.

Yes, fall is not here yet but planning is underway for the 2011 Dyanamo.  You ask what is a Dyanamo? It is a long tme tradition that goes well beyond Harrisonburg's 6 year history of doing their version of a Dyanamo. It is an all evening ride that starts at 10pm and travels some of the beautiful paved and gravel roads of the Valley and surrounding mountains. It is usually on a full moon but a conflict between the full moon and the Shenandoah Mountain Bike Festival will push it back a week.  Put it on your calendar, have your lights charged and meet at SBC ready to roll at 10pm and don't expect to be back until The Little Grill opening time at 9am on Sunday.   Distance...something around 130 miles give or take 10-20 miles.  For tentative route visit Map My Ride!!

Thursday Trail work this evening at Hillandale has been cancelled.

August, last minute summer vacation time. BOB Sytle.

August 15th...Even though JMU does not start for two more weeeks we saw a lot of purple and gold in the shop today. We welcome the students back as well as the cool temperatures that have come this week along with much needed rain.  The forecast for rest of the week looks great which will please Kyle and Whitney as they load their BOB trailers and depart for a 6 day bike tour through Virginia and West Virginia.

[caption id="attachment_231" align="aligncenter" width="800" caption="Loading BOB waiting for to connect to the bike."][/caption]

In the next month are two of the best century rides the Burg has to offer. On Sept 4th is the Shenandoah Mountain 100, a 100 mile mountain bike race through the depths of the George Washington National Forest.  The following Sunday is the 29th running of the Shenandoah Valley Century, registration is still open for the 25, 50 or 100 mile options of beautiful road riding in the Valley.

Thursday the 11th...Cooling down.

Even though it is still in the middle of summer folks are starting to think about Cyclo-Cross, Harrisonburg has never had too much of a cylcing scene but that has been starting to change. Harrisonburg won the famous Blue Ridge Cyclo-Cup the past two years and this October is the Rocktown Cyclo-Cross Festival...So put October 16th on your calendar for a day of fun Cyclo-Cross.

Cooler Temperatures on the way!! SVBC Social tonight!

It has been wet and humid the past couple of days but cooler, drier weather is right around the corner. Take advantage of cool temperatures at the A/C Clementine Basement for the montly SVBC Social/Meeting tonight at 7:30, a great way to find the latest happenings in the local cycling scene.

July 25th..Thank you IMBA!!

This past weekend was the IMBA Regional Summit right here in Harrisonburg. It was great to help host so many hard working volunteers and have the opportunity to show them some of the great local trail work like: Hillandale, Massanutten and Narrow Back.  If you are not a member of IMBA think about supporting their efforts for mountain bike by joining IMBA now.

[caption id="attachment_215" align="aligncenter" width="1000" caption="Great trails provide great views...Thanks IMBA!! Lexington, VA."][/caption]

This Saturday is the start of the summer/fall Harrisonburg Community Charity Rides, the Shenandoah Valley Bike Festival kicks it off at OCP. With rides of 12, 25, 50 & 100 miles there is something for everyone.

Tuesday, July 19, 2011

The heat is on...IMBA weekend almost here.

It was 112 degrees in Phoenix yesterday...just need to put the heat in relatives terms. At SBC we will have the fans on full speed.

This weekend is the Mid Atlantic Regional IMBA Summit right here in Harrisonburg. You don' t have to sign up for the whole weekend to enjoy some of the events.

-Friday Evening (6-9pm)  at Court Square: Welcome and movie showing of Pedal Driven

-Saturday Afternoon (5pm) at Massanutten Western Slope: Super D Race, BBQ and Beers.

Thanks to everyone who helped this past weekend with the Wolfe Ridge trail work and the other volunteers who helped marked the routes for the upcoming Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Festival which is next weekend.

September Event month is right around corner!!

Sunday Evening July 10th.

It was an exciting Saturday downtown this weekend as the Friendly City Food Coop made it official with their grand opening.  Tim, Whitney and Rocky were busy participating at the event with free PULP samples, the line was long as folks enjoy some cold refreshment on sunny day.

Monday is the monthly Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition Socail/Meeting which will be at the Blue Nile Restaurant on North Main Street (Corner of Main and Wolfe Street).

[caption id="attachment_206" align="aligncenter" width="600" caption="Whitney and Rich working on Wolfe Ridge...Help finish this project on Sunday!"][/caption]

July is typically a slow month for local Harrisonburg cycling but not the case this year with Wolfe Ridge Trail Work this Sunday, followed by the IMBA Regional Summit July 22-24th and the Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Festival at OCP on July 30th..

July 4th, 2011...Happy Birthday America!

SBC WILL BE CLOSED MONDAY JULY 4TH.

Typical July 4th weather on tap...some heat and humidity with showers to mix in later in the day. The Tour de Burg is entering day four with Stage 3 happening this morning..the Little Bald/Narrow Back Stage.  After a casual ride to Camp Todd the Tour will head straight up Little Bald Knob only to immediately decend back to the Wild Oak Parking lot, this will probably be one of the longest times sections in Tour History. Even though close to home the Tour Riders will then have to battle Narrow Back and the Secret South, this sun baked section will deplete the riders of anything they have left!! We will give more updates later tonight!

Monday June 27th...

The shop has been full speed this month but things usually slow down some in July as town slows done and folks head for their summer vacations destinations. Hopefully some of you were able to get out for some fun events that were happening in the area, there was the Charlottesville Tri at Walnut Creek, the Canaan Mountain Bike Festival and SVBC trail work.  Below is a shot of one of hundreds, if not thousands of rocks moved and used to armor the growing wet area on Wolfe Ridge..

[caption id="attachment_198" align="aligncenter" width="800" caption="SVBC Team Work on Wolfe Ridge Trail"][/caption]

This week is the final prep for the annual Tour de Burg, a 6 day race/bike event that is always a highlight for local cycling.

The Massanutten Hoo Ha..Fun for all.

[caption id="attachment_190" align="aligncenter" width="1000" caption="Harlan Price, Kyle Lawrence and Collin Vento...XXC HOO HA Podium"][/caption]

It was a beautiful weekend for the 23rd Annual Massanutten Hoo Ha Mountain Bike Race.  With two days of racing there events for all...Kids Races, Super D, Short Track and a full day of cross country racing on Sunday. Thanks to all the volunteers from Massanutten,  the Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition and Shenandoah Mountain Touring who all worked together to make this event such a success. Harrisonburg did it's best to keep as many titles local with wins in the Pro Race, Veteren Expert, XXC, Junior Expert and many other classes.

Saturday's Daily New Record had some good cycling press with an article on the new Rockingham County Bicycle Commission. SVBC volunteers have been working together to help create this new group that will be assisting Rockingham County to help make the area better for cyclist, which will also make it safer for car drivers

Wednesday the 25th...It did not rain today!

Yes it was warm today but no rain and a lot of sun! Even though there is a chance of wet stuff for the next couple of days hopefully the trails will do some drying out. Sunday was the day we have been waiting for, warm temperatures, Sun and not that much wind. The upper elevations west of town still have snow, keeping winter going into April. Canaan Valley was the big winner of white stuff with a foot of new snow for the ski lovers. The European  Road Race, "Tour of Flanders" was a beautiful battle, gettting local folks for Harrisonburg's Spring Classic, "Harris-Roubaix", 12 noon this Sunday. Tonight is the year's first SVBC Social Mountain Bike Ride- Mud Pond...a favorite for all, meet at Union Springs Dam at 5:30pm.
