Mountain bike skills development: Pump Track

Ever wonder why the fast riders are so fast and smooth?  They use their legs and body for more than just pedaling and turning.  They use body movement to gain and maintain speed without pedaling by creating acceleration and momentum.  Riding the pump track is a great tool for learning how to use legs as suspension, corner acceleration and pumping down-slopes while flexing extremities upwards on the up-sloping terrain.

SBC has demo tubeless road wheel sets!

That's right, TUBELESS road tires!  This technology is going to improve everyone's road riding experience.  Running tubeless will nearly eliminate your chances for getting flat tires.  You will also be able to run lower pressure for more supple ride.  The wider rims give the tire a wider profile which increases the footprint of the tire on the road surface, which means more traction.  Come in and demo these new wheels, you'll be surprised how awesome it is.

SBC Staff Favorites - Collin's Pick for 2012

The giving season is upon us, no matter what particular holiday you celebrate, it's the holiday season. With that comes the sometimes not so easy task of finding that special something for  your friends and family.  Here at SBC we would like to assist with gift ideas to help you find that new shiny two wheel related present . With that each one of here at the shop would like to highlight our "favorite" item of the year! My choice , Shimano's 10 Speed Shadow Plus rear derailleur. The On/off Clutch systems nearly eliminates forward cage movement while riding which means no more noisy chain slap on the descents or chain dropping off the chainrings when boosting that big air. And it's not just for full suspension bikes, the shadow plus system quiets down that noisy hardtail bumping down the trail.  Thanks to this little piece of art trail riding has become  much more fun, with less noise and trail side mechanicals one can find themselves lost in the beauty of the wilderness. Available in XTR, XT, SLX, Saint, and ZEE models to fit any budget or riding style!

Customer Product Review: Bobby Toms Loves his Fargo...and Accessories

If you’re reading this, then it’s probably a safe bet that you love bicycles. I do. And boy, do I love my Fargo.

Early last year, SBC took up the challenge of building out a bike that would wear many, many hats. It had to be fantastic for commuting, single track, gravel roads, loaded touring, and everything in between.

Enter Salsa Cycles preeminent monstrosity, the Fargo. Billed as an off-road touring and bikepacking machine, it is a drop-bar rigid steel 29er with a steady and stable touring geometry and braze-ons for racks front and rear, fenders, and five water bottle cages (more on those to come). And it can do so much more.

The ride is something unexpected in the best way. Big wheels and a low bottom bracket mean that you sit in the bike as much as you sit on the bike. Cornering feels like you’re on autopilot, yet curbs, stairs, and rocks seemingly disappear under your tires. But you should realize this bike is a big ride. Stand up and you can easily see over minivans.

If you like buying something and keeping it mint in the cellophane, that’s cool. Really, it is. But the best thing about the Fargo is how well it responds to constant change. Leave it as is, and you’ll miss out on what could be…

Winter Maintenance Clinic 1 was a BIG HIT!

On November 15, twenty-two folks came to the first of six winter maintenance clinics!  The smell of citrus degreaser filled the shop as participants learned how to perform a routine bike clean.  Tim guided the group through this basic preventative maintenance procedure from dropping the wheels to lubing the drivetrain.  Be sure to come to the November 29th clinic, we'll cover derailleurs and shifting adjustment!

ProJeKT 3000 Wants You!

Back in July, our friend, Navid, stopped into the shop looking to get geared up for a bike tour.  He left with a Surly Long Haul Trucker -- a bike many of you know and love.  In the months since then, Navid has identified Neuroblastoma research as the cause for which he will ride from James Madison University to San Diego, CA.  His goal is to raise $15,000 and he is currently in contention for corporate sponsorship from The North Face®.  1000 Likes on ProJeKT 3000's Facebook page will secure The North Face's sponsorship for Navid and it only gets better after that.  This is where you come in.  Aside from making donations, you can like ProJeKT 3000 on Facebook and spread the word for your friends to do the same.  Follow the links below to help out!

Winter riding boots keep your feet dry and warm.

Winter is just around the corner.  Riding in the cold is tons of fun, especially when your feet are dry and warm.  A frostbitten appendage is not fun, safe or healthy so get ready for cold weather with an investment in proper footwear.  We're excited to carry Lake and Shimano winter riding footwear so you can ride all winter in comfort and style.

Frankenstorm Riding Fat bikes on Reddish in October.  Photo credit: Roland Owens.

The MXZ302 boot made by Lake is made of water resistant leather upper, vibram rubber soles, BOA closures and Thinsulate insulation.  This is a popular winter boot for riding in this area.   The boot is tough.  Trail tested and rider approved for rocks, mud and snow.  For more info about these boots, check out the Lake website.

The Shimano MW81, is made of burly light weight synthetic material.  The SWaterproof GORE-TEX® Insulated Comfort FOOTWEAR liner is designed to keep your feet dry.  For your safety and night riding, high visibility reflectors on rear and side of shoes.  To keep you warm, a fleece liner insole for added insulation and heat retention.  To get just the right fit, a volume performance last to accommodate thick socks.  For performance, a glass fiber reinforced polyamid sole with optional spike mount.

Six Pack Invitational Motivation: Narrowback Saturday Trailwork!

Visit the SVBC Trailwork Blog!

We're stoked about the 17th annual Six Pack Downhill Invitational coming up on November 3, 2012.  You should be fired up too!  The "Invitational" is a cornerstone of local shred culture and a tradition that makes Harrisonburg so outstanding.

FAQ: "How do I get to do the Invitational?"

Answer: Do TRAILWORK!!!  IT IS FUN! You need to log 2 Saturday Trailworks in the GWNF with SVBC to score an invitation.  If you haven't done any yet this season, plan on getting dirty the next two Saturdays (ONLY TWO MORE SATURDAY TRAILWORKS BEFORE THE INVITATIONAL!!!)  Saturday morning trail work is a HUGE reason our trails are so much fun and a big part of the local trail building culture that makes Harrisonburg so rad.

Our plan for the next two weeks is to complete rock work on the Narrowback re-route.

Here's a little treat for your viewing pleasure created on October 18, 2012 on 2000 Hours Trail at Massanutten Resort.  The final product from our work on Narrowback aims to create a similar flowy yet rocky feel with tons of playful moves tossed in the mix.

Jeremiah Bishop reigns as the 2012 NUE Series Champion.

If Harrisonburg is the Bike Capital of the Commonwealth, then Delegate Jeremiah Bishop proved himself as a successful ambassador of our strong riding community. He went to the 2012 Fool's Gold 100 mile race in Daholnega, GA this past weekend to wrap up the NUE Series. Delegate Bishop negotiated 100 miles worth of gravel roads, singletrack, endurance clycling, blistering paces and smiling faces.  Congrats to Team Bishop!  Enjoy CyclingDirt's Thom's highlight coverage on the race.  Also, don't forget about the Alpine Loop Gran Fondo this weekend!

Shenandoah Mountain Touring does it again! SM100 Race Recap Video by Thom Parsons

Enjoy Thom Parson's 10 minute highlight reel of the brutal 2012 Shenandoah Mountain 100.  Jeremiah Bishop crushed the course in just over 7 hours winning the Men's category by a minute.  Sue Haywood took her second win of the weekend with her celebratory flabongo at the finish after 8:33 of pushing everyone.  For most of the 600+ riders, simply finishing is a major lifetime accomplishment.  We are very proud of all the locals killing it all the way to the finish line.  JMU Senior Erik Jensen was the first mortal from Harrisonburg to cross the finish line in 21st at 8:21.  He was able to go so fast because he had a broken derailleur, leaving him with only gears 1,2&3 in the big ring for the death climb, he's a kind warrior.

Most importantly, we're stoked to have a champion in our ranks here at SBC. Kurt Rosenburger pedaled the JV Tandem to glory for the 2nd annual top podium finish. "It's kind of a JVSquad thing".

With lots of ruffians from out of town coming through the shop for SM100 weekend, our community did some growing. Several new believers joined the Harrisonburg funbunch after they got some super crucial beta for the 6 Pack Downhill season opener on Braley's. Thom Parsons from CyclingDirt.org made a quick and dirty about his first 6 Pack Downhill. Invitational trophies were commissioned, christened and tagged by winners, Sam Skidmore & Sue Haylady. Sam was sub 10 minutes and 30 seconds ahead, earning his spot on the suspension stemmed soft ride for next week.

6 Pack Season is here!

Before suspension stems and 29" rims, a culture of insanity was sprouting deep in the shadows of the George Washington National Forest with the 1992 Dollar Downhill races. Racers would throw down one whole dollar for an entry fee and go scream down trails west of Harrisonburg each Friday in the Fall.  Racers grew dissatisfied with race fees going to the after party tab at Luigi's.  A culture shift happened in 1995, springing forth a tradition of the 6-Pack Downhill.

This year, we celebrate the 18th year of 6-Pack Downhill rides.  Each Friday at 3pm, riders congregate at the Food Lion parking lot with 6-pack entry fees and fat tire bikes ready to shred.

Enjoy the mid-90's flyers from the days of yore.

On September 2, 2012 hundreds of Mountain Bikers will convene at Stokesville Campground for the 14th annual Shenandoah Mountain 100.  SBC runs Aid Station #3 at the bottom of Dowell's Draft.  We invite you to volunteer with us at our station!  We will be carpooling from Stokesville Campground at 8am.  Please do not drive alone to our aid station as parking space is very limited.

Aid station 3 is the place to be.  You'll can even leave a little early to get back to the campground in time to catch the finishers.  Don't miss this awesome event!
