Before suspension stems and 29" rims, a culture of insanity was sprouting deep in the shadows of the George Washington National Forest with the 1992 Dollar Downhill races. Racers would throw down one whole dollar for an entry fee and go scream down trails west of Harrisonburg each Friday in the Fall. Racers grew dissatisfied with race fees going to the after party tab at Luigi's. A culture shift happened in 1995, springing forth a tradition of the 6-Pack Downhill.
This year, we celebrate the 18th year of 6-Pack Downhill rides. Each Friday at 3pm, riders congregate at the Food Lion parking lot with 6-pack entry fees and fat tire bikes ready to shred.
Enjoy the mid-90's flyers from the days of yore.

We will PULP you up!
SBC recently received a brand new order of jerseys, shorts, and bibs. What is new you ask? SBC has added the beloved PULP logo to their product. Pulp is the smoothie bar located inside the bike shop that promotes healthy eating whether post bike ride or everyday lunching. Pulp is also owned by Tim and Thomas of SBC. Support both by wearing our sweet new jerseys! We have jerseys in red and blue. We have women's jerseys too (and also shorts)! They are still the amazing baby blue they have always been with the PULP logo added.
Below: S. Scott Wootten is modeling SBC PULP Bibs and the red SBC PULP Jersey.
Scott usually wears a Large tee shirt so in this photo he is sporting XL bibs and a size Large jersey.

SBC goes to Madison Wisconsin (Waterloo too)
Thomas and Kyle spent three days last week up at the Trek dealer show in Madison Wisconsin. Besides looking at the entire 2013 Trek product line, they rode B-cycle bike share bikes to at Trek concept store in Madison, largely on green ways and bike paths. Tuesday consisted of a tour of Trek headquarters in Waterloo Wisconsin and test rides of the new 2013 bikes on Trek's own trails located 1/2 mile away from their headquarters. Check out a video of the "green" trail system at Trek. The trails have a whole bunch of alternative lines made up of wooden structures. Below is a photo gallery from the first day of Trek World. Great photos of the bicycle/pedestrian infrastructure around Madison as well as some of the new 2013 Trek products.
Some of the ones that we were most excited about:
The TREK Stache is an aluminum 29er hardtail with a 120 fork and a thru axle rear. After riding it the best way to describe it is the front end of a Rumblefish with a super stiff and responsive rear end. The bike felt playful and light in the front end, begging for "playful" riding. The Crossrip is Trek's new 700c fat tire bike with disc brakes. Also, get ready for Bontrager Tubeless tire systems coming soon, these full kits will set up certain wheels tubeless to avoid pinch flats and the ability to run lower pressure. SBC hopes to have some Bontrager Demo wheels for customers to try out the whole tubeless deal.

Vintage Bicycle Restoration
This week, we had an opportunity to repair and restore an interesting machine. This vintage mountain bike was custom built some time ago with some very interesting features, including 4 chain rings in the front, campy derailleurs as well as campy grip shifters, internally routed housing and a well used brooks saddle. "This is where we came from." Circa 1980's

Custom wheel builds at SBC
Even with so many great high quality options for stock wheels there is no denying the superiority of a hand built wheel. The ability to custom design the exact combination of rim, hub, and spokes to fit the needs of our customers complements the knowledge that the craft of the build is uncompromised. These are two major reasons why we love hand building wheels here at SBC.
Today we had the pleasure of building this wheel for one of our customers. With 36 triple butted DT Swiss spokes, a wide Salsa rim, and White Industries ENO hub, this wheel is a single-speeders dream for reliable off-road riding. The icing on this cake is the White Industries Trials freewheel. 72 points of engagement translate to a very responsive wheel when transitioning from coasting to pedaling and the rebuildable, sealed bearing design guarantee miles and miles of smiles.
