Going Old School on Second Mountain

"Safety is Sexy"...Mr Stephen Proffitt...always sexy.
This past Sunday a fun group of four of us went out to mark a stage of the upcoming Tour de Burg.   The second stage of this year's grand tour will be going old school; fire roads were a staple in the mountain bike community 25+ years ago, when I first started riding in the 'burg.  No better person to take along on this history tour than one of SBC's new team members "The Proffitt". Also joing our group was Paul Johnston, who was tripping out while visiting the sites of some of his first six pack rides, and Vince Bowman who is always up for any type of adventure.
Rocky Run...yes it is!
If you have never ridden the Dictums or Second Mountain ATV trail options, I suggest you hit it this summer. The climb to get to the top of these "Trails" (double track/firerods) is one of the most friendly shaded climbs around, Long Run Road. This 6 mile climb is never steep and has a hand full of scenic turns.  You are never looking down the barrel of what is ahead.  On the climb you will get multiple views towards the north and east, something that does not always happen on your trail rides in the GW National Forest.  When you finally reach the top of Long Run you have final 1/2 mile climb to the ATV parking area of Rocky Run. The mud pond at the top is a forecast of what is to come, large mud bogs that I suggest your avoid.  The descent down Dictums is never steep, but always wide making a game out of choosing the best line.
Stephen experiencing the pin ball action of Dictums Ridge!
It was great to take some good friends on this old school route.  It brought back so many memories of early six pack rides 20 years ago. Treat yourself to something different this year, a ride of the early mountain bike era, maybe you will find a tour rider still stuck in a bog.

Old Man Freeman,

Thomas
But any level of MTB rider welcomed.
Second Mountain, where the mud ponds run deep!
