Brenda!

Hello, Everyone! This has been my third week of working at SBC and PULP and I’m really enjoying it. I’m a firm believer of eating deliciously healthy foods and I’m happy to say that PULP is all about that!  I am also a tea fanatic and PULP has a great variety of awesome teas! Although my knowledge of bikes is limited, I look forward to learning all I can about them and about cycling. All my co-workers have been super helpful and patient with making that happen. In my spare time, I like to watch the Food Network and attempt to try their recipes at home. I like to boogie on the dance floor on occasions and I enjoy singing. Also, I LOVE DOGS!

48 years of shredding must come to an end.

Howdy people of blog world. It's been a while. Between Christmas and the beginning of February I've done nothing but service specials so not a lot of excitement to share. The party started when I left Feb 7 headed to Arizona and Nevada for some much needed head adjustments. I'll keep it short because I could ramble all day. I rode the motorcycle on some of the best mountain roads I've ever been on. I ate a super steak dinner in the back of a liquor store called the Monte Carlo in Albuquerque and to top off the trip I saw Black Sabbath in Vegas on their last tour ever. Photos below hope y'all enjoy.....

Dawn Patrol.

Early morning is what fits my schedule and inner clock, it might go back to years of delivering papers when I was a kid.  I am always looking for riding pals who are down with starting early and being back before bruch time.  This week I was super excited to get two rides in with two different great folks!
Harlan looking back on the ridge..once again Massanutten proves rock-a-plenty

Friday morning Harlan Price motivated me to hit up the Nut while it was stiff frozen. The 2000 Hours Trail with snow and ice sure makes for some exciting conditions. This ride was also another chance to hit the ridge south, more exploration time for future trails! Harlan is a great (re) addition to the Harrisonburg cycling community.

The top of Lynn....a break of the slush!

Sunday morning Jake Brown was game for a early adventure west of town which was cut short a little by the hard morning rains but we were still able to get a fun Lynn/Wolfe loop in before 9:30am. The conditions were super soft with plenty of slushy snow and  ice lingering in the north facing slopes.  You know it is good when your best traction choice half way up the Lynn Trail is the wet rocks.
Jake Brown, always a great riding partner.
If you are ever getting an itch for a dawn patrol I am your partner! Just shout.

Mark your calendars! SBC's 2016 Bicycle Campouts are posted!

It is the time of year again when we sit in front of computers and scheme about all of the fun activities we want to do in the coming warm season. I want to plant some flags in your calendars. The dates for this year's bicycle campouts are:

  • April 16-17
  • May 21-22
  • August 20-21
  • October 22-23
Routes and destinations are an ongoing conversation and I would love your input. What were your favorite and least favorite trips and camp spots over the last couple of years? Do you have a site you've been dying to check out or show to your friends? A favorite road we should hit on the way?Send an email to david@shenandoahbicycle.com and let me know!

If you've read all of this and you feel excited, but unfamiliar with the topic, here is the skinny: For the last two years, SBC has hosted 24ish hour bicycle tours to go to some treasured campsites on excellent mixed pavement and gravel routes. Our goal is for everybody to have fun with whatever bike and gear they have. You needn't be an experienced tourist or have a dedicated touring bike. If you want to make a fire and sleep outside in the middle of a bike ride through the valley, we will help you figure out the rest. Click here for some stories of bygone campouts.

Get excited! And as always, JOIN US - IT'LL BE A REAL GOOD TIME!

Superbowl Sunday Party on Flagpole!

Yesterday more than 100 folks made the intrepid journey to the precipice of Rockingham County; Flagpole Knob (4383').  Warmed by the workout on the climb and then the fire at the top, the group gathered for this photo and then parted ways, descending the various trails in and around the Hone Quarry Recreation Area.

Splitboarding Elliott's Jonas

When you grow up as a snowboarder in the valley, you run out of local riding options pretty quick unless you are willing to travel or get creative.  Wootten went clear off the deep end and started splitboarding after postholing Timberline during the Hurricane Sandy +3' dump.  Snowboarding the tallest mountain in the Shenandoah Valley became a priority goal when the conditions permit.

Elliott's has a special place in the hearts and minds of Valley Boys.  When Wootten asked Watters "Do you want to splitboard Elliott's?" It was no surprise to hear Collin's immediate response of "Yeah, I was actually just talking about that the other day."

Lurking above the valley, Elliott, the quiet giant stands tall at 4500' above sea level.  The peak of great North Mountain can be seen from anywhere in the valley with a South Western view of the horizon.
Wootten and Watters wandered up Waterfall Hollow Trail for the intrepid splitboard ascent.
Its so nice to climb unobstructed trails vs. bushwhacking.  Saving energy is critical for big days.
Jonas hammered Elliott's East facing slopes with wind, condensing the snow into an 18" blanket of dense pow, perfect for climbing and descending.  Poles had no problem hitting bottom, but our boards floated nicely.

Bent but not broke.
After about 3 hours of steady climbing, they reached the fire road. UPUPUP to the tower they went.
When 1 run and 5 hours of climbing come together.  Totally worth it.
