Grindstone, part of the Wild Oak National Recreation Trail is a blast to ride down (sometimes) but is steep rutted and mostly unsustainable with the trail located on the "fall line" of the mountain. The installation of log water bars along the trail only serve as a band aid to try and slow the erosion problems associated with such a steep trail. The Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition as already relocated trails in the National Forest (portion of the Wolf Ridge trail) to make them not only more environmentally sustainable but also more accessible and in many cases, more fun. Make sure you put the weekend of April 14 down on your calendar in preparation for the International Mountain Bicycling Association's Trail Care Crew visit. On Saturday April 14 the Crew will hold a Trail Building School. It will start at 9am and consist of a classroom session at the Simms Center. Then we will all venture out to Massanutten for hands on training. The goal of the TCC is to teach folks how to build sustainable and fun trails.
